First video conference in court

(News Straits Times; March 17, 2007)

KUCHING: For the first time ever, court proceedings were conducted through video conferencing. Judicial Commisioner David Wong Dak Wah of the Kuching High Court heard interim applications in a civil claim for the return of property in an hour-long video conference with the Miri High Court.

James Ho, counsel for the defendant, appeared in the Kuching High Court while Mekanda Singh Sandhu appeared in the Miri High Court for the plaintiff.

According to Gabriel Gumis Humen, the Registrar of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak, the proceeding saved the plaintiff RM1000 in costs in the form of air tickets, court and hotel fees.

Chief Justice of the Federal Court Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim launched the tele/video conferencing facility early last month.
