KUCHING: The newly launched Sarawak Workforce Information System (SWIS) is aimed at providing the government with relevant and comprehensive data to help solve the issue of workforce planning in Sarawak.

Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin cited the unavailability of up-to-date data on workforce planning had made it very difficult for the government to help balance out workforce supply and demand.

He said to address this problem, his ministry worked together with Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) to develop SWIS.

Launched by Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg today, SWIS is a web-based online system to capture the current as well as the projected workforce supply and demand in Sarawak.

“Data will be collected at source from educational and training institutions for workforce supply and from members of industry and commerce for workforce demand.

“With SWIS, the collection of data will be more comprehensive and systematic, providing reliable statistics for analysis. This will be very useful to all relevant stakeholders in their planning,” he said at the launch of the Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCaT Fair) at BCCK here.

However, Manyin cautioned that the success of the system depends very much on the willingness of the institutions and industries to provide the data.

Since the main objective of SWIS is to benefit both the industries and the institutions, he urged all of them to support SWIS and provide the required data.

He assured that all source data would be kept safely and securely in the database with strictly controlled access.-- Borneo Post
