Updated Native Marriage Electronic System to go live by June

KUCHING, May 22: The second version of the Native Marriage Electronic System (NAMESv2), a system developed by the Sarawak government to centralise the issuance of ‘adat’ (custom) marriage and divorce certificates, will go live by June this year.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie said the updated online platform would enable the public to perform ‘adat’ marriage pre-registration applications online through the Sarawak government official portal using SarawakID.

“For offline or counter services’ pre-registration, the Adat Marriage Pre-Reg Assist will be available to the public via 45 District Offices and 22 Sub-District Offices all over Sarawak.

“This pre-registration serves as a verification facility for the NAMESv2 secretariat to process every Adat Marriage Pre-Registration application in Sarawak,” he said in his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

John Sikie also said the NAMESv2 provides the system administrators with detailed and precise records of registered marriages and divorces, which is often requested by relevant government ministries and agencies to formulate governmental policies and programmes.

Meanwhile, touching on underage ‘adat’ marriages, he said the Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak (MAIS) had taken an initial step to formulate a law for regulation.

“The provisions of this proposed law, among others, would include the provisions for solemnisation of marriage, registration of marriage, and capacity and impediments for marriage.

“There would be specific provisions regulating underage marriage,” he added.
